Latex

What is latex?

Latex rubber, often referred to simply as latex, is a milky, white liquid obtained from certain plants, particularly the rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) and some other plant species. It is a natural rubber substance composed primarily of polymers of the protein latexin. Latex is used in various industries, especially in the production of rubber goods, elastic products and many other applications.

Here are some important uses of latex rubber:

1. **Rubber Goods**: Latex is often used to make rubber products such as rubber gloves, condoms, balloons, rubber bands and rubber boots.

2. **Medical Applications**: Latex gloves are widely used in the medical industry for infection control and pathogen protection.

3. **Textiles**: Natural latex can also be used to make elastic textiles and ribbons.

4. **Construction**: Latex can be used as an aggregate for concrete to improve the strength and elasticity of the concrete.

5. **Balls**: Latex is often used to make sports balls such as soccer balls, basketballs and volleyballs.

It is important to note that latex can cause severe allergic reactions in some people, especially through direct skin contact or inhalation of latex particles. Therefore, people who are allergic to latex should take precautions and use latex-free alternatives when using products that may contain latex.
